Their acquisition by EMC was announced at the end of 2003, subsequently positioned as an IPO and part of the further acquisition by Dell Technologies. Currently, Dell retains 80% of the economic ownership (and 97.5% of the voting ownership) of VMware, which has itself completed many acquisitions.
