Veritas was created by Symantec Corporation in 2014 as a strategic spin-off of their information management business, while the security unit continued to operate as Symantec. The categories split off from Symantec Corporation included products in backup and recovery, business continuity, storage management, and information governance. The selected name for the new entity was rooted in the company's history. It was originally founded in 1983 as Tolerant Systems, renamed Veritas Software Corp. in 1989, then merged with Symantec in 2005. The name was planned to be restored as an independent, publicly traded company in 2015.
In an unexpected turn of events, the company was acquired by The Carlyle Group and taken private instead, announced in August 2015 for $8 billion USD.
