Aruba was originally founded in 2002 by Keerti Melkote and Pankaj Manglik. The company was venture backed by Sequoia Capital and Matrix Partners. In just three years, it entered into an agreement to provide OEM equipment to Alcatel-Lucent, a major milestone for the startup. In March 2007, Aruba went public on the NASDAQ exchange with the ticker symbol 'ARUN', cementing its place among the Silicon Valley elite.

Later in 2007, the Sunnyvale-based networking leader acquired the wireless security business of Network Chemistry followed by the 2008 purchase of AirWave Wireless, a vendor of wireless network management software.  In turn, Aruba Networks was acquired by Hewlett-Packard.  The deal was announced in March of 2015, completed in May of 2015, and when the new parent company split in November of 2015, Aruba became a key component of the newly formed Hewlett Packard Enterprise and dropped the 'Networks' from the official title.
